Governor Heineman Addresses Boys’ State and Girls State
On Wednesday evening, the Honorable Governor Dave Heineman of Nebraska addressed a joint session of Cornhusker Boys’ State and Girls’ State. The 39th Nebraska Governor and United States Military Academy graduate related his experiences and knowledge to the delegates and opened the floor for questions.
Governor Heineman began by encouraging the delegates, stating that a high school education is no longer sufficient and that a minimum of a two-year college education is necessary to be able to compete in this global economy. He went on to note his mission to make Nebraska attractive to young professionals so that we keep bright minds and ensure a bright future here in the state of Nebraska. A new survey, Heineman noted, ranks Nebraska as the #1 state to start a new business in and as the #9 state for existing businesses. He also made reference to the outstanding unemployment figures that Nebraska has; only 3.9% of Nebraskans are unemployed, compared to the 8.2% average unemployment rate nationwide. This places Nebraska at #2 for lowest unemployment rates.
Governor Heineman related some rather humorous anecdotes to the delegates as he voiced his opinions on some of the issues facing Nebraska. He concluded by saying that “the future of Nebraska is in this room. If you aren’t willing to get involved and make a difference, we aren’t going to get any better.” He also noted that “it is a high honor to come here to address Boys’ State and Girls’ State each year.”
Cornhusker Boys’ State and Girls’ State were pleased to welcome Cornhusker Boys’ State Alumnus Dave Heineman to this joint session.
