After the athletic intensity of the track meet followed by a quick stop for dinner, the delegates assembled in Kimball to hear presentations and to inaugurate their Justices and other elected officials. The delegates were privileged to an address by Cornhusker Football Head Coach Bo Pelini. Coach Pelini emphasized that competition is not about winning or losing, but about becoming the best possible person one can be. At the same time, Coach Pelini was clearly optimistic about the upcoming Husker Football season. Following Pelini’s presentation, the delegates heard from John Gerrard, Nebraska Supreme Court Justice; John Bruning, Nebraska Attorney General; and Mike Flood, Speaker of Nebraska Unicameral. These three prominent Nebraska government officials discussed their roles, upcoming elections, and answered delegates’ questions. After this informative presentation, the 2011 Boys’ State Justices and elected officials were inaugurated by Honorable Mr. Gerrard. Before the assembly concluded, candidates and PACs had the opportunity to purchase some microphone time to advertise their cause, of which several delegates took advantage.

This Thursday morning, after participating in an intense gubernatorial caucus, the Boys’ State delegates assembled in Kimball Hall to hear a presentation from Clay Anderson, a Cornhusker Boys’ State Alumnus and NASA Astronaut. Joining the Boys’ Staters again were the brilliant young ladies of Cornhusker Girls’ State. Anderson related his experiences, including astronaut training on earth, launching and landing in the Space Shuttle, and living and working in the International Space Station. He then took questions from the delegates about issues ranging from the future of the space program in the U.S. to daily life in space. He urged delegates to dream big and to never stop working to achieve their dreams.

This afternoon, under gray, cloudy skies, the delegates gathered at Ed Weir Stadium to compete in track and field. The competition is always a fierce one, since it brings together the most impressive athletes from every corner of Nebraska. Luckily, though the weather was overcast and chilly, the rain did not arrive until several hours after the meet. Thus, the Boys had pleasantly cool temperatures in which to determine who could run the fastest, jump the highest or farthest, or throw the farthest. Of special note, the 4×1 relay was won by the town counselor team, proving once again the value of age and wisdom over youth and vigor.

Earlier today, Cornhusker Boys’ State delegates voted in the gubernatorial primary, from which Nationalist candidate Christian Mapes of Valley Forge and Federalist candidate Lukas Fricke of Alamo emerged victorious. This evening, these two candidates participated in a small townhall debate, which precedes the debate that will take place in front of the entire delegation tomorrow morning in Kimball Hall. Among the issues debated were agricultural subsidies, education, gay marriage, universal healthcare, imminent domain, and Second Amendment rights. Special thanks to our newspaper staff and multimedia staff for streaming coverage of the debate live for all towns in Cornhusker Boys’ State to watch. If you would like to review video footage from the debate, CLICK HERE! The debate begins approximately eight minutes into the video footage.
