Opening day athletics for 2024 Cornhusker Boys Staters got into the action today as they took the field, stepped up to the plate, and hit the courts in competitions that pit their newly founded towns and teammates against each other. Camaraderie is palpable on each floor, that is evident. Chemistry among teammates are still in their early stages. With that said, some teams have gotten off to a very fast start, while others performances leave more to be desired. Results from day one are as follows:

Athletics at Cornhusker Boys’ State has a proud tradition. Each town fields a team in basketball, flag football, sand volleyball, and softball. At the end of pool play, teams will be seeded in a championship tournament.

Several area attorneys, lead by Wayne Jansen, guided newly formed city councils through their first simulation activity. The councils discussed meeting procedures and potential ordinances. These groups will hold meetings multiple times during the week.

Last night each city elected five members to serve on their school board. Today, delegates attended an educational workshop to learn about how school boards work and to discuss current issues facing school districts. Marsha Herring of the Nebraska State School Boards Association gave an interactive presentation covering procedures, regulations, and hot topics in the world of education. She addressed several topics with the new board members asking, “what do you think a school board should do?” Mrs. Herring serves 1700 school board members across Nebraska providing them education and support.
Following the workshop, delegates will hold their own school board meetings to practice what they’ve learned.
