Frequently Asked Questions about Cornhusker Boys’ State

How can I apply to attend the upcoming session?

The application process begins around the first of the year and concludes in March.  The exact process for application and selection varies slightly from school to school.  Generally speaking, if you are interested in applying for Boys’ State, key points of contact at school are usually the guidance office or government education department.  If you are unable to find the key contact at your school, please call the American Legion Department of Nebraska headquarters office in Lincoln at 402.464.6338.  See here for more information.

What are the dates of the 2024 session?

Sunday to Saturday:  2 – 8 June 2024.

I’ve been selected to attend Boys’ State.  What happens next?

First of all, congratulations!  You will receive a packet of information from the American Legion that includes instructions and forms that need to be completed prior to registration, as well as detailed information about this year’s program.  Additionally, you will be invited to a district orientation in your area to welcome you to the program, provide an overview of things to come, and answer any remaining questions.

Where will the session be held?

University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Housing is typically in the Harper / Schramm / Smith residence complex.

When does registration (check-in) occur?

Sunday, 2 June 2024, from 12:00-1:30 p.m.  IMPORTANT: Staff will not be fully assembled to receive registrants until 12:00 noon.  If you have to arrive early or late, it must be pre-arranged with the American Legion prior to check-in day.

Can I assume that smoking, drinking alcohol, and gambling are not permitted?

Correct.  All of the above are strictly prohibited at Boys’ State.

What kinds of clothing and accessories should I bring?

Bring enough clean clothes to last one week.  Daily attire is the boys’ state t-shirt and shorts.  Having at least one pair of long pants (jeans/khakis) is strongly suggested for the group photo and occasional evening session.  Athletic clothes and shoes are required for sports activities. Comfortable shoes are a must.  We walk – a lot – everywhere on campus.  Track meet shoes are also helpful if your event requires them.  Finally, a pocket umbrella may come in handy.

Do I need formal wear (dress clothes)?

No.  Attire is business casual at the most.

How much money should I bring to Boys State?

We suggest no more than $50-75.  All meals are covered.  The extra money would be used for snacks, souvenirs (extra shirts etc), gas to and from the program and a parking pass if you are driving.

If I drive to Boys’ State, where can I park?

Parking is in the residence hall parking lots.  Parking passes must be purchased at registration and keys checked in at the front desk.  It is very important to park only in designated areas listed on your parking pass.

Are all meals provided?

Yes.  Three meals per day are provided.  Meals will be served in UNL campus cafeterias.  The first meal will be at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday evening.

What if there is severe weather during Boys State?

The University of Nebraska has a severe weather alert system and safety procedures.

What will I need to do if I have to arrive late or leave early?

Generally, we discourage leaving early for any reason, family emergencies excluded.  However, if you must arrive after registration ends or leave prior to graduation, all arrangements must be made PRIOR to registration!   Please contact the department headquarters office at 402.464.6338

What types of recreation activities will be offered during the week?

Basketball, football, softball, sand volleyball, band, chorus, and newsletter.

Can I leave campus during the week?

No.  With nearly 400 delegates, off-campus travel is restricted to emergencies and pre-arranged events.

My friend is going to Boys’ State.  Can we room together?

Roommates will be assigned prior to arrival and selected for geographic diversity.  Part of the Boys’ State experience is getting to know people from different parts of Nebraska and making new friends.  We do not have a system to accommodate special roommate requests.

Is there a limit to the number of people my high school can send to Boys’ State?

No.

I already know that I want to run for a specific office, can I bring campaign materials from home?

No.  Bring your ideas instead.  In order to create an even playing field from the beginning, all campaign signs, flyers, posters, and other promotional material, must be created at Boys’ State from the materials provided.

What if I don’t get elected to an office?

If you are not elected to an office, there are many exciting ways to get involved at Boys State.  Many who are not elected to office choose to volunteer for someone else’s campaign or support a cause they endorse.  Additionally, the Boys’ State Governor will appoint delegates to appointed positions.

How does the “economic” part of Boys’ State work?

At Boys’ State, you start out with a simulated electronic bank account and some “Boys’ State Bucks”.  Boys’ State Bucks are used to “fund” political campaigns and political action committees.

What happens on a typical day at Boys’ State?

There isn’t really a “typical” day at Boys’ State.  Every day is different.  Daily activities include a balance of hands on activities, engaging speakers, and recreation activities.

Can I become a junior counselor for future sessions?

Yes.  We are always looking for talented leaders and choose counselors with past Boys’ State experience!  Junior counselor applications will be available during the week.

Can I bring my smartphone, tablet, laptop, or other portable technology?

We do allow students to bring portable technology.  Use of such items must be used at appropriate times in appropriate ways.  Rules for use are similar to those in many schools (not during class time, no explicit content etc).  Cornhusker Boys’ State is not responsible for any loss, theft, or damage to this type of equipment.

Will a free wifi connection be available?

Yes.
